If you are struggling with your mental health and need to talk to someone, here are some organisations that might support you.
Shout a free service available to everyone in the UK, and it won’t appear on your phone bill. Whatever’s going on, letting it out can help. When you text them, there’s a trained volunteer at the other end to talk with you – silently, by text message – until you feel calmer. Text ‘LET IT OUT’ to 85258.
Samaritans is a registered charity that provides emotional support to anyone in emotional distress, struggling to cope or at risk of suicide throughout the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland, often through its telephone helpline.
ADHD Babes is a community group for Black Women and Non-Binary people of African-Caribbean descent with ADHD. We create safer spaces for us to flourish and live our lives to their greatest potential.
The Maya Centre counselling for women is a community-based charity in Islington providing free, culturally sensitive counselling, group work and complementary therapies.
Bayo is a UK national platform to find collectives, organisations and services run by and for the Black community, to support their mental health and well-being.
Focus groups are currently closed. Twenty-seven women across seven focus groups were asked to provide details of their experiences of depression, treatment and outcomes, and how they believe these experiences might be shaped by their race, gender, and/or endorsement of the Strong Black Woman schema.
All focus groups have been transcribed, and we are currently analysing the data
A massive thank you to the women that joined our focus groups and shared their stories!
For this study, we were interested in the relationship between Black women’s identity and experiences of depression, low mood, or just not feeling “mentally okay”. Therefore, we asked women to rate their experiences with depression based on their identity. In addition, they were also asked to provide basic information about themselves (mental health of family members, age, nationality, student status, employment status etc.)
The questionnaire is currently closed, and we are now analysing the data. Thank you so much to all the women that completed the questionnaire and to everyone that shared it across their networks.
